This new auth system will make me sell my printers

Yes, truly horrible.

A shame that I have recommended their printers in the past.
I feel guilty and sorry for that.

Well. I certainly will not be buying my planned 5 new printers through BL after just opening my business. Prusa, here I come.

Also disappointed with the news of this planned firmware update.
I’ve been tasked to search the market for several new 3d printers for my workplace and my employer is looking to buy at least 30 printers, where I was planning to recommend the X1C to them.

We use a 3rd party software to remotely monitor and control the printers that we already have and the ones that we plan to purchase, but with this expected firmware update, it’s put Bambus printers out of the equation and we now will look to buy different 3D printers elsewhere.

So well done Bambu, you’ve alienated and pushed away so many current and potential customers with the news of this update and are becoming the Apple of the 3d printing world.

We can all complain about morals, ethics, TOSs, etc… I certainly have.

At the same time, Bambulab, like all companies, is a capitalist enterprise, so currency is the only currency.

They will change course if incentivized economically. Nothing else matters.

They saw this as an opportunity, or they wouldn’t have done it.

But,the only emotion stronger than greed like this is fear.

Therefore I believe that all efforts should be aimed at causing economic pain. That, and only that will bring about change.

Where’s everyone getting the subscription talk from? Same goes for locking the AMS to only Bambu filament, where’s this coming from?

What printers do you currently use in your business?

Because LAN mode really restricts functionality.

I’m not new to 3D printing—I’ve been doing it since the days when you practically had to build the whole printer yourself and fine-tune every little detail just to get a decent print. I also have a collection of printers, from FDMs to SLAs and MSLAs.

I don’t like being restricted when flying. Can I just ignore new aviation laws and complain about them when they’re introduced for security reasons? It’s certainly not fun when new regulations mean I have to shell out a couple of thousand euros for new equipment! Just a lighthearted comparison here—I bought my aircraft for a specific purpose, and yes, there’ve been some extra rules along the way that have forced me to adapt how I use it.

But back to the topic—everyone seems convinced this is going to be a fail. So, what are your sources of information that even Bambu Lab doesn’t seem to know about?

It’s purely conjecture and should be taken as such.

Gotta keep in mind, conjecture around here is akin to the women folk at beauty shops. It’s cold hard facts altered to suit ones ego.

Cancel culture is so funny. Mark my words that Bambu will come out the other side of this just fine.

…cancel culture isn’t people being upset about a company ripping features away on a product they already bought and have workflows that work for them.

Really living up to your namesake there :+1:

Thank you for clarifying that—now we’re all on the same page. I’ll wait and see before getting too excited about this. It could turn out great or be a complete disaster.

It’s a bit disingenuous trying to compare a regulated activity to the ownership of a printer.

For me it isn’t about being “a fail”. If this is truly a security issue, let users make the choice. The reason I doubt the intentions of Bambu,… why on earth do they think I want a device inside my network having to request authorization before performing a print.

But you did research the company before buying your printer, right? Then you would have known they are based in China, that the printer is primarily cloud-based, and that LAN mode is an optional feature.

I also gather that you seem to believe everything is going downhill with fanfare and that nothing at all is good. Are we in agreement on that?

LAN mode isn’t optional, it is defined in Bambu’s documentation.

I have BL P1S’s sitting behind me… I just opened last week

I’m not printing stuff from subs or anything. It’s all my own stuff. IF they do this, it will definitely put a wrinkle in my plans short term; but at this point it doesn’t matter if they decide not to. I’ll be looking into CoreONE’s now.

When I purchased mine, you had to manually enable it, which clearly makes it an optional feature.

The term ‘optional’ is significant here because it implies that the feature is not essential or inherent to the printer’s primary functionality. Instead, it is something that the user must actively choose to activate, meaning it is not part of the default setup. This distinction highlights that the feature is available but not automatically integrated into the core experience of using the printer.

So by that definition, turning the printer on is an option.
