This new auth system will make me sell my printers

Jeff Geerling just dropped his bombshell take a look at this second channel Level 2 Jeff.
And his is right, Bambu Lab should stop changing things for users on the go. They will lose their customers, their community and ruin their reputation.
This happened with many companies and they are manking a great mistake by not learning lessons from the past.

In my opinion, if you want to use their cloud, great they are securing it better (supposedly) with Bambu Connect, but “LAN Only” should be just that, no internet, no cloud, no additional Bambu Connect middleware, be it in BS or a 3rd party slicer. Auth once with the code off the printer and be done with it.

With that said, looks like BL is walking back or “Clarifying” their statements in their latest blog, and also addressing everyone’s concerns in this thread.

Everyone is up in arms (me too) and it’s all over YT and maybe that’s due to some vague or poor wording of original blog or maybe all this pressure and is forcing them to change their direction mid-flight. Me personally, i don’t want cloud connected anything if i can avoid it and their updated statements are a step in the right direction. If you recall, this is not their first controversial move, they are new and have growing pains like any other company.
It’s up to us, the community, to try and shape their path forward so they can continue to develop and produce quality (hopefully) and affordable machines everyday users, creators and everyone in between can afford and use.

1/20/25 - Updated Post (original on 1/16)

Key Points

  • Beta firmware for X1C Only at this time (P & S will come later)
  • Network Plugin for 3rd Part Slicers via Bambu Connect, currently in development.
    Quote:
    • Standard Mode (Default): By default, LAN mode will include an authorization process that ensures robust security. This option is ideal for the majority of users who prioritize security and ease of use. Despite claims to the contrary, LAN mode through Bambu Connect will require neither internet access nor a user account. This hasn’t changed and won’t change.
    • Developer Mode (Optional): For advanced users of the X1, P1, A1, and A1 Mini who prefer full control over their network security, an option will be available to leave the MQTT channel, live stream, and FTP open. This feature must be manually enabled on the printer, and users who select this option will assume full responsibility for securing their local network environment. Please note that Bambu Lab will not be able to provide customer support for this mode, as the communication protocols are not officially supported.

Opinions matter, so does respect - our posts should have both, towards BL as well as each other!

I am sure this has been posted by many already, but I am desiring to post this as well. I was slowly starting to really like my p1s, doing the first prints, getting up to speed with the software. And now this.

How dare you change the conditions on the sale that you made to me after the fact. This is just disgusting.

You have totally scared the living daylights out of me and I have totally lost trust, this will not be easily reversed. I went from being Bambu Lab - only, scanning for any news about upcoming printers, to scanning the markets for any good alternative to Bambu Lab printers.

Also no Bambu Lab filament for me, and I will be canceling the order of the cool plate Supertac, trying harder to use another brand. Just because using any Bambu Lab products now kinda makes me feel dirty.

Shameful. I will not give them another penny or stop telling everyone I know until they reverse this course in a way that gains trust which I’m not sure if possible.

What really baffles me is that anyone can even complete a thought that basically says “well it doesn’t effect me so I don’t care” much less type it out AND post it! Holy cow! Holocaust anyone?! I know that is an extreme example but the principle is the same. Not caring until it’s extreme is a lazy and foolish strategy used by those that don’t dare inconvenience themselves. Look at paper printers and the scam they have become. Imagine 3d printers becoming the same way. Quality decreases dramatically when customers don’t have a choice. In other words companies don’t have to compete. Imagine machines that work but not that great. Filament that is okay but missing lots of good colors. Slicers that work most of the time as long as you are ok with saving your work often and lots of tinkering. RIGHT BACK WHERE THE 3D COMMUNITY STARTED. If I’m making your blood boil and you can feel the adrenaline in your veins STOP and go watch V For Vendetta. “If you’re looking for the guilty…you need only look into a mirror…”

@dimebreadz69 @geluid Right. Some people don’t think…

PERFECT REPLY to a silly and poorly thought out post. Thank you. I don’t think people have to take history anymore and have the memory of a goldfish…

Lol, like creality?

Sorry, let me back up, because I just had to have a good chuckle with that one.

What do I care? It doesn’t affect me.

Oh, that was actually kind of easy to write. Not sure how that baffles you so. If you want to have a go and see, I suggest giving it a try. It’s easy.

I mean, before Bambu printers and their slicer, I felt like a lot of time was spent tinkering. I need more time to tinker. How can I get more of that?

I don’t need to look in a mirror to know what I’m guilty of. I’m well aware my crimes against humanity. How aware you are though, I don’t know. Was that you watching me from the bushes, or the pesky fbi again?

Are you like a blood microwave? Or? What wattage? I’m not feeling my blood boil. It feels… normal? Should I feel it boiling? I’m not sure.

You heard it here first folks. This is the perfect reply.

Uhh, unless you’re a kid in school, then you totally should still be taking history.

Huh? What was that? I think I was on my way to get a soda from the fridge or something. Haha, you know how it is when you walk in a room and completely forget why you’re there.

This does not feel like the same Josh we used to see here, sadly.
But i won’t be in the middle of that discussion. Was just a thought…

Google it.
Bambu Lab 3D printer may not allow you to print if you don’t update its software because recent firmware updates from Bambu Lab include a mandatory authentication system, meaning you need to be logged into your account and have the latest software to initiate a print job, even for local printing on the LAN; if you choose not to update, your printer may be restricted from starting new prints.

I personally don’t understand the trust issues.
I’ve now read through the bambu blog post and they still provide the offline lan mode if someone hates the cloud(me too). But with the improved security additions.
That currently does not change a thing(for me at least), I can still use it locally without the cloud and just the authorization is changed. I don’t think that we need that “enhanced” security locally except your grandma with her phone tries to access your printer without permission somehow when you give her your wifi.

So for me, it’s okay. Do we need it? I don’t think so except if you are a cloud user.
I will still use bambu and this is not something that destroys my trust. I use bambu studio so that still works without issues offline.
One thing I think would be good to have is an option to disable it(at least for lan mode) to keep things simple locally when I tinker with it.

Of course this is just my opinion

I’m just exhausted with all of this and lashing out in a snarky manner.

This is my community, and over the past few days here I’ve seen it completely over run and shat on by day old accounts. The sheer amount of misinformation, bad takes, and just knee jerk reactions and all of it.

And seeing on Reddit, the blatantly false things that people tried to spread, and fine, there’s problems. I wont be such a ■■■■ as to say with sincerity that “What do I care? It doesn’t affect me.”, because it does. Even if it doesn’t directly, it still affects the community I’m a part of, and those that do make use of these features; people that are my friends, that are people I respect.

I’m sick of these people flooding in here on their crusades though. They don’t make me feel sympathetic to the issue. They come in screaming and yelling about how horrible Bambu is and just going over as such. A lot of it doesn’t come across as genuine to me.

Reading the post of my fellow forum users though, that’s different. You guys don’t come in here trying to stir ■■■■ up. We don’t all always get along, but we’re here around each other and show each other a level of respect that just isn’t there with this stream of people flooding in to complain. Some of the most thoughtful post have come from those on this forum. Even those that may not be so keen on Bambu already, but they are still actively a part of this community and still treat it with respect.

Key word here is may. Bambu officially said they are not going to be bricking printers

I was not trying to stir you up, i am sorry if i made it look that way. It’s just that sometimes i just come here to read “you” or other fellow community members and get a chuckle out of it after a sh1tty day.

I get it, no worries. After reading it all i got the point but i had already written the previous message.

Everything is good when good is everything

It’s self reflection. I looked in the mirror, and maybe I didn’t see a criminal, but I did see a side of myself that I’m not always pleased with.

And there’s where the self reflection stings a little, because I feel this. I was being snarky, but out of frustration and not just the joy of being silly. I was trying to take a step back, but still managed to place myself right in the middle of it.

Basically, I think you’re right, and that was an admittance that I’m not being my best.

I wasn’t referring to you and actually approved of some of your comments. Maybe put the phone down for a while. I think you’re a little wound up.

Some of my biggest concerns are paywall and cloud connection to make BS work. I already don’t like Fusion360 cloud. I don’t like having to connect to the cloud to save/edit files.

com’on, some of that was funny. I mean, looking into a mirror, and I even did a call back. This is like top tier stuff here.

Like I said though, I was just being snarky. Nothing I said in that particular post should be taken too seriously. My apologies though, as it was at your expense in a way that it didn’t have to be.
