Read the relevant topics and attached articles and videos, and you’ll get the gist.
I think everyone’s a little too exhausted from all the explaining (and arguing) at this point to try and summarize the topic (I know I am).
Looks like consumers are after all dumb, if any of this update puts you at rest.
If you can’t see the purpose of an app and the cloud, for a printer, you have been asleep on the wheels for many years.
There is ZERO need for a cloud service or any related interfaces, keys, logging, etc, other than to take away control from owners, in order to up-sell features down the line. And all the data harvesting is on another level.
All these printers need, is a driver, like any other hardware!
If you keep buying Bambu printers, you WILL pay down the road for today’s vote with your wallet!
I tried to make a brief summary: This new auth system will make me sell my printers - #825 by zwerko, but the devil is in the details - there are 1k+ posts on this thread alone discussing the issue to various level of detail - take a beverage and a snack of your choice, sit down and read it up
Or even more simplified (wiser men do not say for nothing: “one image speaks more than 1000 words”):
Bambu users on this side, Bambu on the other
There are no shortcuts to knowledge I’m afraid.
so I take it that Bambu is trying to do something the wrong way and no listening to the community, they are making something that blocks orca slicer?
Stuff
The article mentioned above pretty much much explains the what happened in order, the fallout, and Bambu’s backpedaling. The tl;dr is Bambu said they would break stuff stuff in the name of security, a bunch of people started sharpening knifes and pitchforks saying it was really vendor lock-in, and now they say they won’t break stuff, but given their “authentication” connector is about as secure as a wet newspaper… no one in their right mind believes anything they say on that front atm.
That’s pretty much the gist of it. I’d say also “not listening to experts in relevant field” too.
The “bambu connect” doesn’t “block” orca, but introduces soooo much friction into normal flow of sending prints for no gain to the user. They ARE blocking in a way 3rd party components that used to be able to talk with the printer (and are pretty much standard across every other 3d printer, seriously)
Just for info, since the “security update” scandal (meaning since January 16th, when Bambu first posted on the “update”) the users reviews on Trustpilot have exploded and its rating dramatically dropped from a 2.4-ish to 1.7 and the dropping tendency is still continuing, demonstrating the users anger is still raging, and also showing that whatever statements were made by Bambu to appease the angry community, the trust between the two parties is now gone, and no one believes Bambu until solid proof will be presented and will pass community scrutiny.
i love apple i have a lot of things from apple… but i can still use ms-office and google apps and any slicer runs on a mac i can also use any printer i want hp, brother, etc.
what they want to do now is not right
Well. Because both members, and moderators here keep censoring my posts, and the posts of concerned paying/long standing customers who have dozens if not HUNDREDS of machines. I will never buy another bambu product again. First they release a “safety and security update” trying to gaslight me into believing a remote CCP cloud server is more secure than my own home network. Then when the community pushes back “the majority, not minority of the community btw” they release a damage control hitpiece gaslighting AGAIN saying anyone who has concerns is spreading “misinformation” and is a conspiracy theorist. Hmmmm where have i heard that technique before… and answering every question with “not with our current product offering” meaning their statement is false in a few months when the H2D launches. Then to top it all off, they have the gal to censor and ban anyone talking about it on the forum, youtube channels, reddit posts, etc. Nothing ive said warrents taking the post down. Nothing ive said goes against community guidelines. Ive read them several times over, and nowhere in there does it say “speaking the truth, or critisizing bambu labs is prohibited”. Go ahead bambu, show your hand by deleting this post too, maybe giving me another soft ban. Thats been proven very effective in the past for ensuring customers remain loyal, we want nothing more than to be censored and bullied. We should report your behaviors to the FTC and CFPB in mass for fraud at worst, false advertisement at best.
It’s not - it has stated on the record that nothing will change for the existing product range but might change for future products - read this
Here’s what Bambu will — and won’t — promise after its controversial 3D printer update - The Verge
“Stated” are words and words can be rooted in trust or mistrust based on actions associated with those words. People have lost some trust based on some back peddling and changing of words. Have a look:
btw: love my X1C. It’s my only printer and hope I can continue to use it as I see fit for years to come.
As a heads up looks like they removed another post about this.
But if Bambu are reading this, I will not be buying first party consumables or parts from yourselves, and I was stoked about the upcoming rumored XL printer, but I will not be buying that and start moving towards competitors.
Locking down your cloud service is understandable, that has ongoing (and expensive costs), but it can not come at the reduction of local access to my printer that I paid for.
Absolutely unbelievable! Even the current LAN mode is somewhat artificially crippled.
Was also considering buying another p1s or A1 but with this very fishy move I am looking to other manufacturers. I am also the one person for many (Family,Friends, their friends, collegues, etc.) which is being asked for recommendation regaring anything 3D Printing. Now I need to find a good alternative which dosen’t do foul to their customers. I was recommending bambulab but I will not recommend bambulab anymore. Thanks.
do you have a link to it, or point out what was said in the previous version? That unless you’re referring to Bambu’s first blogpost announcing the new firmware. In that case we all have noted and are fully aware of their content “moderation”.
I still think it’s huge that Orca Slicer basically said: no thanks, we’re not buying into that, and is advising their users not to upgrade.
I wouldn’t want to be a 3D printer manufacturer that isn’t easily interoperable with Orca Slicer. When I shop for a new printer, as I did several times in 2024, I choose from the list that’s supported by Orca Slicer. If a printer isn’t on that list, I don’t even consider it. And I suspect I am far from alone in that.
Recent events now adds a new distinction. No longer is it just whether or not it’s on the Orca Slicer list, but how well does it integrate with Orca Slicer.
So, what else is there to recommend besides Bambu Lab printers?
I’m being serious. There is no other printer that stands anywhere near the price of an A1 or an A1 Mini with anywhere close the ease of use, reliability, and performance.
If you are the type to get a Voron 2.4, yes, sure, for double the price of a P1S or an X1C, you can get something that does more and has a bigger build volume, but you’re going to spend a few weeks building it and you’re going to have some experience building 3D printers. And I’m not even talking about getting an AMS to work with it.
OK, how about Prusa Core One? Yeah, super. Unless you want to build it as well, it’s very expensive. It has a usable AMS… but that aint cheap either.
So my point here is: if your family and friends are the type of people who are not tinkerers and just want to print without a hastle, then they also don’t care about easily using third-party slicers. Bambu Studio is a very good slicer for most people. So the Bambu changes recently are not relavent for them at all. So why not recommend Bambu to them?
If they do care (and I do care, just to make it clear – I USE ORCA SLICER, my P1S is in LAN mode now – so no need to hate on me because I am pointing it out that probably many Bambu customers are not impacted at all) and your friends and family want Orca or any other slicer integrated nicely with the printer, than indeed, they can spend $2000 and alot of time and effort and get a Voron and use absolutely any software with it they want.
Just saying.
@RenHoek Well, look at the list, and there’s your answer. If you haven’t looked recently, it’s a pretty long list. There’s a lot more than just Voron or Prusa Core One on it.
[Edit: I’m not trying to encourage anyone to jump ship. I’m just pointing out the unintended consequences of what may come with the current trajectory. Whether I say it here or not doesn’t matter; it becomes an inevitable decision tree.
If you’re the captain of the Titanic and you see an iceberg in the distance, you maybe have time to course correct and do something about it. If you wait until your hull is ripped open because you think you’re unsinkable… maybe that’s not a great strategy.]
