Unethical not to donate points for a profile to the designer?

Do you think it feels a bit unethical not to donate points for a profile to the designer? Say you create a much-needed profile for a popular model, but you choose to keep the points yourself. I don’t think it feels quite right, but at the same time I want to get some return for the work done. In this case, a profile that really needs a pair of brims to guarantee that the print will be good.

Depends… If your profile really adds value it is no problem for me.

If you just insert a copy paste profile to get points it is questionable at best…

Just my 2ct.

I don’t think it’s unethical - it’s normal.

Unethical is point leeching by adding “faster” print profile by reducing infill or something else in hopes of attracting people to your profile. Or worse - changing absolutely nothing and slicing on x1 to achieve faster projected times and so your profile is the same, but it’s point leeching

Copy paste profiles are never okay. I’m talking about actually solving a problem.

then getting points for that is 100% OK in my book.

It depends…

I’ve uploaded a couple of print profiles to other users models and not donated points. They were models I wanted to print for myself, but couldn’t based on the designers profiles being incompatible. e.g a non-scalable print in place box being too big for A1 Mini or ridiculous print times/purge waste for a small model.

In these instances I made changes to the model, via the STLs, so is actually quite a pain to do and requires quite a bit of time too. e.g splitting up a print in place box hinge so the 2 halves could fit on an A1 M and then designing a way to reattach the hinge.
Or splitting out eyes and other features from a figure so you can print without an AMS or without wasting a massive amount of filament.

In these instances users without an AMS or a 256mm bed can’t even print the designers models - so I actually helped the designers by enabling more users to print it. I made the changes not for the points, but because I wanted to print the model, but the points are a bonus.

But people who just upload profiles with 1 setting change to harvest points can get in the bin! I wish MW would allow designers to approve profiles first, maybe even allow the user to explain what they have changed / justify the need for the new profile.

e.g I’ve had 4-5 point farmers upload to one of my models and reported all of them. But one user uploaded a profile where the parts were split over multiple plates with different colours. It would have taken them a few minutes to do, but I let that slide as it does provide some value to users who want that, or don’t know how to change individual part colours in Studio or Handy.

Funny enough, the people that usually check the option to donate the points to the designer (me), are the ones I think deserve keeping the points themselves, as they usually do something to bring more value beyond the basics I setup.

I agree with you as well! It’s interesting how those who bring extra value often choose generosity over keeping the points for themselves.

We need an Uno reverse card for those that are kind enough to make improvements and still donate the points to the designer.

I made a feature request a while ago to allow those who have created print profiles for designer’s models the ability to go back and ‘donate’ the points.

I do not believe ‘donate’ is the correct term.

I have only ever created profiles for other models that either lacked A1 mini support, (now fixed for new profiles, they never went back and did the old ones) or added colour ability to those who had not.

Even before the requirement, I created a print for each one, sometimes multiple to achieve the goal. Some of the prints are many hours long, some in double digits.

I am not suggesting changing all of the ones I created, but, there are a few I would like to reassign the points to the model designer.

It didn’t get a lot of love.
