Updates and Third-Party Integration with Bambu Connect

will be waiting a day or two for a response before canceling my AMS. No one singed up for this.

As a recent adopter of Bambu, I am extremely diappointed. With all of the documentation on the printers, an awesome Bambu WIKI that is awesome and still communicates like an engineer. Look let’s get real here. In the 3d printer space, users got into it for the freedom. The freedom to tinker, the freedom to choose what updates, and the freedom to say no. Like me many users have used different brands and even built from scratch. We started with parts from the hardware store until better became available. This are the points you missed in this update. What happened to user surveys? You have a alerts and messenging system in the software, so why not use this to ask for information? Let’s keep it simple, every manufacturer seeks advice from the community and tries to meet them halfway. Think about if for just a moment, why are there so many YouTube channels that feature building, modding, upgrading and most of all, what software they choose to use. These are the principles of the 3d printing community, freedom. Freedom to choose how the printers move forward and having some input from your customers for what they NEED, not what you think they need. Don’t get me wrong we all understand security is important and at times necessary, but as the user, we choose how far we want to go. The reason why so many customers buy and recommend your printers is not just the technology but because we were able to find solutions unique to each type of user. I understand from your notes and updates on outstanding items. This is Awesome!! I have only seen this in my time in large cooperations in America, when I was a part of it anyway. One of the downfalls of the communications is that it is too matter of fact. Please look at the history of 3d printing and the Riprap movement and see that this is the foundation that all of this is built on. Even new users have that expectation becasue of that foundation. Contact me if you want to hear the common sense approach.

Actually there would not be any security issues if they did not forced the cloud server in the first place.

I recently bought a P1S to start with 3D printing, because I am a newbee to this. I bought this because of the reports on quality and ease of use, If I had known that Bambu tries to get hands on my assets and force me to use only their stuff I would never bought this.
As a consequence I will stop buying from Bambu and look for alternatives.
What a pity, I loved the spirit around Bambu in the first place, but with this action they ruined it and it will be hard to trust them anymore.

It has been pretty clear to me from my first purchase last November that all Bambu services were one big joke, I’m one of those naive users that believes that creating new customers is silver but keeping the old ones is gold. Communication should be honest and correct, when making a mistake, take responsibility and admit you were wrong, claiming that content creators now make false claims is complete BS and shows me once again, Bambu has good products but is a shitty company after all and treats its paying customers badly. Happy to see that giving away free printers to content creators is not enough to keep up appearances.

Can someone clarify something for me, I am pretty confused because some of the Youtube Videos and Online forums about this topic are confusing.

I have a P1S since last November, after this update you can only use Bambu Studio to send prints to the printer when it is in your home network. But what about the Bambu Handy App and the camera? Does both still work? I often start a following print for a project when I am not at home and look in the app on the camera how the print looks (that is why I got one).
I only use Bambu Studio so that is not a big problem for me…
If you need to pay to use the app or if you can´t use the camera to watch the print over the app my P1S is for sale thats for sure…

It is a bit sad that my Panda Touch is not going to work anymore, all in all I don´t use it so often but as i said it would be sad…

I really can´t believe that you can ONLY use Bambulab Filament for the printer. That would be the same if you buy a car from a specific brand and you can only use parts from this brand and nothing else. Thats for sure not legal here in Europe. Hopefully they don´t put in something in the code which leads to more errors during printing with none Bambulab Filament…

Do you think Anycubic is also going that way?

The update currently is only in Beta stage and only for X1 printers. If it goes “live” for P1 and you update to it and you’d use “developer mode LAN only” mentioned in post, you should technically be able to send jobs to printer locally from Orca without use of Connect app.

Then after the updates nothing would change for you.

Currently neither studio nor handy app are or are planned to be paid. The only “possibility of introducing paid features” was in print farm management software.

No moves were made in that direction by Bambu. That being said, this does have precedent in 3D printing world (didn’t bode well for that company) and is “norm” in inkjet printers from hugely poplar manufacturer.

I doubt any company would look at the blowback and think “yea, that worked great, let’s do that too!”

Thanks for your answer, that clarifies a lot. As mentioned i watched some youtube videos about this topic and read a bit online, some comments were really confusing…

Yes, there are no player controls. That would be because it is not video. What pops up when I click the link is an animated gif.

I am new to Bambu with an x1c and am so disappointed to see a company throw away so much goodwill and promise on such a misinformed direction truely astounds me. I tested out the Bambu Connect app and who in their right mind stifles the workflows with an intermediate app, this reeks of amateur hour. Next firmware needs a direct to printer API that is fully supported on the printer interface and not some half arsed middleware. All the pieces are there if MQTT was already being successfulyl utilised.

Want to dominate and be the recommend platform of choice in 3d printing, fire your current senior software engineer/CTO/Marketing expert, listen to the community and open your tech up, securely of course. For now I am personally watching to see how you handle a proper response to the serious concerns the community has about bambu labs latest direction. Pretty sure under Australian consumer law this bait and switch change to the ToS will favour me the consumer. Shame as I was starting to really like your product. Balls in your court Bambu Labs, are you going to abandon your prosumers?

PS I made my purchase decision based on the prosumer youtube content/reddit(dont judge :grinning: ), all I see today is your brand taking a beating and people recommending replatforming.

Finally a more realistic view on the case. Everybody jumped on it like creasy, without a real reason. of cause share our concerns with Bambulab is good, but plain out burning them on front is not how you communicate with a company or individual. As soon as Bambulab is actually locking down you filament or you printer from using it freely or whatever lock in stuff, you can yell whatever you want.

Here is what completely baffles me…
When a company takes an action that sends their respective community into a complete uproar, why don’t they react, and backpedal?

There have been countless companies that have either been destroyed or badly damaged when they did not listen to their customers… and not just little companies. look at NZXT, the damage they have sustained by being sketchy as F and not listening to their customer base / community, will take a long time to recover from… if they ever do.

Bottom line, your company can be severely de-valued by your community, and it’s influencers… If ya F up, admit it, apologize and take corrective action before it’s too late. If you think your plan is solid, and we all think it’s ____ing stupid, than side with the community and some of it’s Subject Matter Experts (SME) and you’ll be fine.

You have been warned by many many people… I would bet thousands have given negative feedback on your new “Security” firmware.
If you ignore them, and your profit drops by 25+% you have NOBODY to blame other than yourself and your naivety.

I wouldn’t say that everybody jumped on it “without real reason”. There are many reasons to be very upset by what is happening and I don’t think I need to compile a list because this thread sums it up pretty well.
And the fear of Bambulab trying to force a subscription onto their users and makes it only possible to use their filaments may be very speculatory, but this is floating in the room because it has happened before. With many companies.
While I don’t like how inflatory the word “enshittification” is used nowadays, this could be a very real singn that Bambulab is going down that route.
People being very upset at Bambulab right now is very important because it shows that we don’t tolerate anti-consumer behavior (which is for a fact what Bambulabs actions are).

I think at the moment the P1S is not updated to this day.
But this will affect everyone as Bambulab claims to enforce this on all their printers.
If you don‘t update, I hope only cloud printing might be affected. Nevertheless connecting the printer to the network without blocking it form the internet poses a risk for it to be updated without your consent.

Additionally BL could also push updates via Bambustudio because your computer still has internet access.

I for my part now regard my Bambu as a malicious piece of hardware and am isolating it to the best of my knowledge which means setting it to lan only mode, blocking it from the internet in my router, not using BambuStudio and replacing it with OrcaSlicer

I am new to 3D printing. Just got the A1 few weeks ago. It’s difficult to understand what all this hoopla is about. Isn’t Bambu Studio based on the OrcaSlicer ? So, why do so many users rather want to use Orca ?

Hi! I have an update regarding my answer…

My answer was based on official bambu communication as I understood it. I however was privvy to see how BambuSlicer beta and X1 with beta firmware communicate. My views have changed due to that. There’s some future testing to confirm one other thing I’m worried about, but that’s for the future.

This was incorrect on my part. New firmware and new studio require usage of Bambu Connect to be able to send prints to the printer.

The verge article with Q&A from bambu clarifies that they do not plan to limit filament for the current lineup of printers.

That being said - the testing of X1 and BambuStudio beta shows the necessity of using Bambu Connect to send prints to printer in cloud mode. So what in my opinion was unnecessary friction to 3rd party slicers has become unnecessary friction to everybody, even ones using BambuStudio.

Inverse is true - OrcaSlicer is based on BambuStudio. The rate of innovation, bugfixes, quality of life improvements and other “goodies” is greater and there are multiple reasons to use it.

Of course, they waited till after the holidays to make the announcement. Certainly not intentional  If I was still within the return window, this thing would be gone.

At what point does this become true? I’ve been using the beta version of Bambu Studio with and without Bambu Connect beta installed without any failures to print. Is it only realized after you use the beta firmware? Because I do not have that at the moment.

Yeah, I never really liked BBL emphasis on the cloud to begin with, but then BBL unlocked the video for the LAN only mode, and even allowed the development of X1Plus firmware. So, I really did not expect this locking down and locking out especially in a dishonest way pretending to do it in the name of security.
What security means to users is being able to fully utilize LAN mode without sending data to the cloud. Devices, such as printer and their associated apps and the cloud are not very secure by design, so leaving them connected to the Internet is an invitation for a botnet to use our equipment.
Again, the best security practice is to have the device on LAN only, not to install any kind of network plugins, and block Internet access with a firewall (router). So, as far as security goes, this is what users want, and as it was said before, we do want freedom of choice.
What we do not want is to get locked into anything. The special “Developer” mode is not the answer. Freedom to choose the software, filaments, and the connection mode is the answer.
In any case, I have switched to X1Plus into LAN + shield mode and configured the firewall to block mostly all printer communications with the Internet. X1Plus is still supported, and requires users to downgrade their firmware first, although the process of switching requires users to accept big BBL disclaimer that this may void all warranty and support.
Just like many here, I was preparing to purchase the new BBL flagship and hundreds of dollars worth of stuff from the store, but it looks unlikely that I will be making these purchases even if the situation is favorably resolved. It looks like instead of working on upgrades to our printers and the new flagship, BBL is working on the lockdown plans, and even Creality (which was playing catch up) was able to release the bigger, better, and faster printer ahead of BBL. This is very disappointing. I do not know if my next move is going to be K2plus, Qidi, Prusa, Ratrig, Peopoply or Voron, but probably not BBL.
