Can the P1S read the rfid tags without an AMS?

Yes, it doesn’t. None of their printers can.

Only the AMS has the ability to save the few seconds selecting the filament (in your case) through BBH.

The X1C has the touchscreen, wich makes any input more user friendly or even in the case for the combo P-Series and AMS at least possible without the mobile app.

Addidionally the NFC tags are locked and only obtainable along BBL rolls from their store. So nothing to go for, unless you need the printers to be foolproof / running 24/7.

Some tried to decrypt them, but the progress prograstinated.
