Usefulness of the Filament Track Switch for the H2C/D

My setup:

left side has 1 x AMS 2 Pro, 3 x AMS HT
right side has 3 x AMS 2 Pro, 1 x AMS HT

I think the prints where the FTS is helpful are more limited than one might think/hope. But there are also some benefits that aren’t obvious, drawbacks, and some unrealized benefits waiting for software. I’ll try to break down my opinion here.

Single color prints

You get the convenience of printing any material with any nozzle, without swapping anything around. This sounds like a nice convenience. But since the machine doesn’t support using different nozzle sizes in the same print, you probably already have the same size nozzle on the left as the majority of your right nozzles (0.4 most likely). So the single color print could have just been printed with the left nozzle to begin with. I keep a single 0.2 and 0.6 nozzle on the right, so being able to print a left material on these is the only remaining benefit in the single-color case that I can see.

2-color prints

For 2-color prints and a H2D/C machine, you’d typically want one material on either side, to get the fast 10 second changes with no filament cutting. And this can’t be done using the FTS with two materials on the same side, since there is only one feed line per side to the FTS. Using the FTS you could feed two materials to two right-side nozzles, and you get the benefit of shorter filament retractions since it only pulls back past the FTS (not all the way to the AMS), but it still cuts the filament so it’s not a big save. Maybe 10 seconds per change? So the end result is that you are still juggling spools to make sure they are on separate sides, and at that point you definitely want to get the faster switching speed from using both left and right nozzles with no cutting, which could be achieved without the FTS.

The edge case here may be if you have two specialty nozzles on the right, and the FTS would be save some filament loading time by keeping both filaments ready closer to the printer. You’d still have to make sure the spools are on different sides to get any benefit at all.

Many-color prints

Here there just isn’t much of a benefit in the general case. To print efficiently with H2C, you’re usually trying to make sure a base material used throughout the print is always loaded on the left, while the right side swaps between materials. But to make this work, you need to move spools so that the base material is on a different side from the others and the FTS does not change this significantly, since it only has one channel per side (it does let you swap the sides).

The edge case, which truly is an edge case but still the one Bambu touts in their marketing, is when you have different combinations of two materials for different heights of the print. The FTS can often make sure you get material changes with no cutting by making sure the two materials for the layer are assigned to each side. BUT, you still have to make sure all the combinations are spread between the two sides. It works in practice if you have a “base” material that you can keep on the left, and the different accents on the right. But that case already worked well without the FTS.

Problems

The resistance added to the filament path is no joke. It can be made reliable enough, but this is clearly eating into the margin of performance and I had some feeding failures before redoing my lines. This is why they added the silly funnels, since we are now much closer to the limit of AMS feeding.

The missing product

The whole setup is clearly, obviously, missing an “AMS 3 Pro” that has a built in 4-2 switch, so that each AMS can feed to either channel. You’d still want an FTS near the machine, so that the AMS can use one channel as the “next” material for the same nozzle. This setup would allow the next material to always be ready to load very close to the machine, speeding up the nozzle change.

Although to make this truly optimal, you’d want 3 channels. You want to allow the left nozzle to have a material loaded with no cutting, while the right side is changing quickly with the next material queued up. The FTS part for this setup could be simpler, just a filament detector and a merger, since the AMS would decide which side to target. And this merger/detector seems like it could be built into the machine, just like it is on the A1.

The missing software

There are some software updates to the current hardware that could make it a little more useful.

First, the slicer should show a much better preview of my options for nozzle assignment and spool placement. One of my 0.4 nozzles is HF, which is yet another variable that I have to play with manually to find the best tradeoff.

If the slicer supported multiple nozzle sizes in the same print, the general benefit from FTS would go up as well.

If we placed our 4-1 mergers close to the FTS, the AMS units could retract only past this merger instead of all the way to the AMS. Actually this would apply even without the FTS, since the AMS units can retract a fixed distance if the software supported this cleverness. But since each AMS only has one output, the benefit here is limited.

Bambu Slicer also severely lacks the filament assignment strategy of “shortest print time”. That’s the one I want. Without the FTS, this was usually the same as “filament saving”, but with the FTS that is less frequently the case and I don’t think it properly communicates this.

Current best target audience

I think it’s the X2D, which makes sense given their launch alignment. Since aux nozzle is different, you’d want to avoid it when you can and this lets you do that for single color prints, and swap the sides for 2-material prints. This is a clearer benefit, which mostly doesn’t exist on the H2D/C since the left nozzle is the same as the right ones (usually). If you do use specialty nozzles on the H2C, you get a similar benefit.

Conclusion

For the H2C and H2D, the FTS is a convenience benefit in several cases. But it saves only a little time in most practical cases, and it adds serious resistance while also making the thinking process (my poor brain) while slicing much harder if you truly are trying to understand the bottleneck and optimize the print time.

I think you are absolutely spot on. And even with the X2D and only 3 AMS, many of your findings apply as well. I came to the conclusion that a manual 4in2out switch where you can individually assign each of 4 inputs to each of the two nozzles solves far more use cases for me than the FTS, even if the assignment is fixed for one print. As you say, I can just as well swap that single spool for the prints where I need it.
If at all, the FTS makes sense for exactly 2 AMS in my opinion.

And I thought I had mastered these issues after so many experiments with the track switch on my H2C until this morning… I launched a 2 color print where evidently I selected a different nozzle for each color just forgetting those 2 colors were from 2 different AMSs connected to the same switch input!

I realized it well during the print and the remaining time was same as the full print if I had connected my AMS to the other input or swapped the spool, so I let it run :rage:

Just tried PAHT-CF through the switch, can’t even load from AMS-HT. I tried from an AMS v1 which may be more compliant to back pressure and it loaded but with a lot of drag when PLA was flowing through very easily. This switch is becoming even more something I don’t need!

I received my switch today, but I am holding-off the installation until there is more feedback. It seems like a great idea at first, but not as simple as first hoped. Its not really true that any filament can print to any nozzle. All the filaments in all the AMS’s connected together have to print to the nozzle(‘s) on one side, and all the AMS(‘s) on the other side have to print to the other nozzle(‘s). This seems pretty limiting and only very occasionally helpful. Especially on the H2C which has 6 nozzles on one side anyway. I’m still trying to find a good use case.

My track switch arrived today. I purchased as more a convenience thing, but now I’m wondering just how useful it would be! I thought it could still load, and keep loaded, a filament on each side at least, but seems it can only load one filament at any one time? So with a 2 colour print, you’re actually worse off?

In some days arrive filament switch, i only use 2 AMS and if necessary i have another one in the p2s.

I think maybe its a good thing to mount the filament track near the H2C entrance/buffer because the filament is loaded in the switch now (not in the ams, if i read correctly) and this can help to reduce travel time of filament with vortek changes, one ams is near but the other one isn’t near (two AMS in the top of the machine i need to make an adaptor for install this switch near and test).

Yes, it can keep 2 filaments loaded simultaneously, but only if they come from two different inputs into the FTS. So if you group your 4 AMS into 3x AMS at input 1 and 1x AMS at input 2, and both filaments come from the group of 3, you can only load one at a time.

It can load two filaments at once, and they have to be from different sides. So there is that convenience. But I had already structured my filament loadout rarely require swaps, with my common base materials and engineering materials on the left, and all accents and fun colors on the right. So I’m not helped by the ability to swap them.

Yeah I think this is a real benefit - the shorter loading time. But if they wanted they could do even better with a little software (configure/detect where the 4-1 mergers are).

I’m estimating the shorter load only saves seconds though, and only in the case where only one material per side is used. Plus, with the resistance problem you are forced to optimize your feed paths anyway so…

If there is a specific technical claim you disagree with, quote it and explain why.

If headings are enough to make someone leave a technical discussion, that is their choice. It does not make the technical content invalid.

I have an H2D. I frequently print engineering projects which are much faster with a 0.6mm nozzle, and mostly fairly small simple projects for my kids with a 0.4mm nozzle. Not too crazy many color changes. And I’m often away from home 2-3 days so I pre-load filament for prints. I guess will have some use case for me

Yeah that is pretty much the perfect use case. Special nozzle available only on one side, and you don’t want to move spools since it’s “unattended”. Although I’m sure there are kids staring at what’s cooking through the door:)

You’ll want to run a torture test with many changes to every AMS, to shake down any loading problems before leaving.

I have 4 AMS 2 Pro and 4 AMS HT hooked up to my H2C. I concur with your conclusion.

I get a lot of warnings on some of the AMS units because of too much resistance. It isn’t ideal for so many AMS units connected thru the track switch. Some will just be too far or have long lines so the bends are looser. To be honest, for me I will probably just remove it and manually swap spools when needed. Now, for someone with 2-4 AMS units, it might be worth it.

I have been pondering about the usefullness of the FTS before and after my purchase. I’m in the same boat as OP, only difference is that OP has 2 AMS-HT more than me.

Yesterday I went for it and resetup my AMS’ and the FTS. The setup I came up with was as following: 1 AMS HT and a regular AMS on the left nozzle, 1 AMS-HT and 3 regular AMS on the vortex. Made a small magnetic FTS bracket to mount it on the back of the cabinet housing all my AMS’.

Despite trying to make the curves as optimal as possible, the AMS truly struggles to get the stuff to the extruder. Already had a small piece of support material broken and stuck in the FTS. This was just loading 2 filament for a single color print with support material. I don’t want to imagine how its gonna be with a multicolor print with a 1000+ filament switches.

As OP pointed out, the only usefull usecase would be on the X2D, treating the right nozzle as a secondairy nozzle, so preferable feeding filament to the left nozzle.

On the H2C it’s basically useless. The only thing I could come up with, is accessability to your AMS. a few of my AMS are not easy to reach, having to sit on the floor, disconnect the PTFE on the back and slide it onto my lap to change a roll of filament. Only the AMS on top of the cabinet is easily asccessable. With the above configuration, 1 could fill 1 AMS with some primairy rolls like Black and White, or 2 spools of PLA and 2 spools of PETG, and leave it in there since theyll be use most of the time. 1 AMS HT that you can use to easily switch a spool in and out for certain prints. For the right nozzle the user could use 3 AMS with a variety of colors and the AMS HT for also specific material, engineering materials or support materials that need high temps for drying.

Other than the above, it won’t benefit the workflow, since when 1 spool out of the 12 spools is loaded and using up the PTFE 4-1 Adapter, to use another spool, you need to retract the prev spool anyways, thus defeating the purpose. The FTS will only provide extra friction in the filament path, thus increasing rate of failure, especially on multi-day prints. Imagine being 6 days into a print, only for it to fail because of the FTS inbetween, without any added benefit.

Maybe i’ll just remove it for now. I could always take 1 regular AMS hook that one up to my H2D, which has 2 AMS-HT. But even then, since it’s only a dual nozzle system, it wouldn’t make much sense to do that either…

It works perfectly for me, adds almost no extra friction and is far more useful in most scenarios. For more than 4 AMS, I would probably use another one and join the outputs from both in two 4in1, one for each nozzle. Alternatively, the same author has a 2in1 that replaces the inlet into the printer, so no extra tools dangling around and no extra PTFE transitions.

When changing an AMS to another nozzle, I have to manually reassign it, but that just takes seconds.
This has my full recommendation for anyone who wants flexible AMS assignment.

Cool, I think I’ll do something similar. If one is really committed to having the FTS, I think it also combos nicely with a manual switcher. Since even with the FTS you’ll be moving spools to get the best assignment. This lets you flip switches instead of carrying spools, some of the time. (the manual switcher doesn’t help if you need to split two spools that are in the same AMS)

It’s a huge convenience factor for a pretty cheap price. For some reason this particular gadget have spawned an enormous amount of long analysis posts justifying not buying it, often because “I can just switch manually.”. It’s even a post in this thread calling it “useless for the h2c”.

For something like the h2c printer itself there were also similar novels written saying it was so bad/slow/insert hyperbole here.. but at the price of a 3d printer I kind of get why people might want to dissect everything in justifying not wanting to buy it. But this is a 55 euro gadget, it’s even cheaper then a build plate.

Why have this particular thing caused so much angst? I am genuinely curious.

Anyways, I have a H2C, 3 ams 2 pro and 2 ams ht and this thing is the single best 3d printer accessory I have ever bought, so much simpler to be able to load whatever plastic roll wherever and just let the slicer use it.

Here is a use-case for you: if you travel weekly for work and have finally taught your wife to switch build plates, it’s easily worth double it’s price to not have to teach her to swap spools around between ams units for the next print.
