Just thought I would drop a few posts on here to show my progress on my X1-Carbon enclosure.
My printer is situated in a workshop that gets pretty dusty so I wanted to create a clean area for my printer to live.
I set off with the idea of utilising an old server rack but the problem with servers is that they need a lot of clean air and tend to be full of holes so I decided to model an enclosure based on the dimensions of a server rack - that way I can utilise off the shelf components such as power supplies, shelves and drawers but still keep the printer in a sterile environment.
The components were custom ordered to the design - I did have some spare parts lying around but the 4040 aluminium extrusions looking a bit too big for this so opted to design the enclosure in 3030. You could go down to 2020 to reduce costs further.
The carbon rods form the frame for the sliding mechanism that the AMS sits on. I tried using a drawer from a server mounted upside down but it wasn’t robust (or cool looking) enough - plus I wanted to continue the carbon theme.
No sorry, the printer is simply sitting on top with the ams plopped in the bottom, no shelves. Only other thing is a spare UPS sitting in there. It’s rather ugly.
That would be great!, especially since my shop foreman aka wife as decided to evict me out of the workshop aka dining room to the basement. Google Drive link or Printables? $$?
Sorry I haven’t managed to get the parts up online yet, I’ve been doing some work on the enclosure over the weekend and felt the original design wasn’t as robust as it should be so I’ve made some changes.
I’ve also added in an Amazon Smart Air Quality Monitor so I can measure temp/humidity/VOC’s actively.
Would an enclosure like this be good for an environment that isnt tenp controlled? Such as a garage. Or would i need to build a thermal enclosure for when it gets colder.
The enclosure seems pretty well insulated from the rest of the workshop. Humidity is still pretty high but I suspect it’s coming from the rear wall that it’s mounted to as it isn’t perfectly sealed.
Any enclosure will certainly help, especially if you hook up some passive heating or incorporate a small dehumidifier.
I’ve done some further enhancements with the enclosure to give me enough clearance to get two incorporate another AMS.
In hindsight I should have made the enclosure larger so I could mount both on slide rails but it isnt a showstopper, access to the bottom AMS required the top one to be slid outwards.
