X2D Combo buyers heads up on the AMS2

The AMS 2 does not come with the power supply necessary for printing while drying. You must turn off drying before you can print without it. I found this out by googling it after I could not start a print job. Don’t know why I expected it to just work or for Bambu to just supply it. They don’t.

The AMS 2 Pro never comes with the external power supply in any of it’s forms - in the H2x combos, when sold on it’s own, and in the X2D combo.

Yeah. The H2D (and probably the C, dunno about S) has enough power to dry one AMS2 while printing, albeit at reduced power.

I have one separate power adapter which I move around between several AMS’s (I don’t use the drying very often)

At least its a simple DC jack without any lock-out through software.

As long as its 24V and 4A, should be able to use whatever you have, e.g. ender3 power suppy lol

This may make me unpopular, and to some sound whiny but I expect full functionality in the box on a product like this. The adapter is likely less than $4 dollars to manufacture China. 1 sells for $10 on Alibaba and $16 on Amazon. $32 on Bambu’s website with free shipping over $80?

Well Bambu did me a favor and saved me some money I guess. At least the spec was available so I could order it on Amazon. The frustration of having to find out why it wouldn’t print until I turned drying off? Priceless!

Kudos for that right? The shipping weight was probably prohibitive with the adapter in the box. I’m sure this some good reason for not adding it.

How did we get to be such poor consumers that we don’t push back on stuff like this? This is why tool manufactures got us buying “Tool Only! Battery Extra!”. And in some cases the battery is worth more than the tool. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Yeah. I ended up ordering 3 of them on amazon for about 50 dollars with one day shipping.

To play devils advocate, they have not advertised drying while printing on the sales page for the X2D or the AMS2 pro. Up until recently, it was still a beta feature.

…I always expect all available Bambu Lab build plates to be included, but I’m disappointed every time. ^^

If you had read up on the AMS 2 Pro and its drying function before buying it, you might not have started this thread.

The AMS 2 Pro product page states:

For drying function:
One switching adapter is required for each AMS 2 Pro unit.

Under certain conditions, drying with one AMS 2 Pro is possible without a power supply!

You can read about it in the wiki.

So yes,

it’s a bit like nitpicking.

Have a nice day.

Yeah, but I hate when companies don’t provide a power adapter in the box.

The AMS2pro is interesting. If they included the power adapters, I’d just have them all collected in a box somewhere. I mainly use the HT for drying because my regular AMS units all have mixed filament types. The HT has its power cable included! Which makes more sense to me.

I wonder how others approach their setups and drying. I realize I’ve never dried in my ams2 pro units.

It probably also has something to do with the product pricing.

Fewer components mean lower costs.

So it’s not a big deal if it wasn’t included.

Other AMS 2 Pro and AMS HT owners might be using the same thing as you. Drying in the HT and the AMS 2 Pro is idle. In that case, I’d go for an AMS 1.

Bambu Lab will be closely monitoring usage patterns and adjusting their pricing accordingly.

Sorry just trying to help potential buyers wondering why it’s not fully functional. I found it surprising. I would have kicked the accountants in the nuts and said PUT IT IN THE BOX if it were my company.

Actually I might not have bought it if I did read that. All this great functionality but you need this one more over priced “extra” bit to get it. I perused the combo extra’s, purchased a few and missed that bit. We’re talking about a cheaply made part.

My scenario is going to be adding another spool for drying while it’s printing so I’m ready for the next job. So yeah I hate when they don’t add it too. But it won’t be sitting in a box somewhere. I’d be embarrassed if I did that to my customers. Truly. As I should be.

I didnt realize BBL was advertising the ability to dry while printing. I know when I bought my first one I had no idea is was possible, it was only after reading folks here on the forums complaining that it wasn’t an option that I started wondering about it. I got excited and couldn’t wait for it to be implemented, now I am not so sure pre heating my finely tuned filament is going to work out for me.

I live in a coniferous rain forest. No choice but to keep things dry. I have to run a dehumidifier 24/7 up to 10 months out of the year sometimes or my tools would be rust. If a print job is running and I can dry? I’m using it to it’s fullest.

Acutally, under the X2D, the description is
For drying function: X2 series printer can power one AMS 2 Pro unit for drying without the switching adapter. To dry filaments in multiple units simultaneously, each additional AMS 2 Pro unit requires its own Switching Adapter.

If the AMS 2 Pro is bought as part of the X2D combo, the only description about AMS is

  • To connect more than two AMS (including AMS 2 Pro, AMS HT), a 4-in-1 PTFE Adapter (FAZ013-N) is needed

It says nothing about the switching adapter.

So for X2D, it looks like unless one is using two or more AMS 2 Pro units, no switching adapter is needed. The thing that isn’t clear is if the “drying fuction” implies drying while printing.

@SupportAssistant @BambuLab : We can use some clarification here. Is it possible to dry filament while printing using one unit of AMS 2 Pro on a X2D now, or is it waiting for a firmware update?

If you have the latest firmware installed, the answer is Yes, you can dry while printing.

You must use an additional AMS external power supply (purchased separately) for this function, as the X2D’s power supply prioritizes printing over drying when using only the printer’s power.

When the printer is idle, you can dry filament without the power adapter, only relying on the printer’s power supply.

Thanks. I was going to go back to look, make sure I didn’t miss something. Still, it should just be in the box. But good to know they don’t supply it if I wanted to purchase another one.

Thanks for the clarification. I have thought that the 2 series (H2x, X2x) all have enough power to dry while printing if only one AMS 2 Pro unit is used, even though the drying temp will be lowered because the printing takes the priority. So it looks like it won’t dry at all while printing without the switching adapter.

In any case, it is good to have the adapter anyway so as not to put too much burden on the printer power supply.

I think whether the switching adapter should be included in the box is a judgment call. Including it can be convenient for some, but for those who don’t use AMS 2 Pro for drying, it can be considered an unneccessary cost that is forced on them.

I’m still undecided on whether to buy the x2d as my first Bambu, but what exactly did Bambu do to its customers that was so bad in this case? Asking you to purchase a psu to get some extra functionality?

Like buying a car that comes with a myriad of additional functionality, IF you pay extra for it.

A lot of people are happy with it and the unexpectedly low price, you just don’t hear them because they’re not whining all day on forums.

The only downside I see so far is the extruder access can be difficult compared to the X1/P1 printers but the pros outweigh the cons for most users. Just get it.
