MakerWorld Release Note 0724

It’s not that clear to me. it says “we offer point rewards for …”, not something like “we provide a reference showing reward points gained at some common download milestones”.

You could be right that it’s just translation. But let’s see what MW says.

I made a similar request when the A1 mini came out. At least another user made similar request recently on this forum. There could be requests made on other venues. So it seems there are desires for this feature.

I have mentioned it a few times in the forum with others agreeing.

It should be a trivial addition as it is purely visual and does not add to any slicing rules.

For reference, where is this chart shown on the MakerWorld system?

I assumed the rules page, but, nothing there.

Showing grids or marks for different-sized plates is useful because even if the new feature 2. Enhanced Print Profile Compatibility can rearrange the model parts including reducing spacing among them, there are situations when manual placement can fit all the parts onto a smaller plate while automatic arrangement can’t. One example would be a donut-shaped part with a hole in the middle. One can manually place other parts within the hole while auto arrangment won’t.

I couldn’t find it either, if it indeed is a reference chart. But I have’t done an exhaustive search.

Here are a couple of times I have noted the feature.

We have spoken about it together before.

Here’s my request back in Nov 2023 when the A1 mini came out.

Here’s another user’s request recently.

I am a relative newbie compared to you, I only found out about the forum in February and did not engage significantly for a couple of months. I received my first BL printer in late Dec 2023. I had been 3D printing for four years at that point though.

I started 3D printing a few months before Bambu Lab came onto the scene. I can offer loads of admirations to you, but let’s not do the lovefest here

Allowing users to download STL/CAD files makes protecting our designs even harder.

MakerWorld should be helping designers protect their work and supporting how they want their work handled, not making it harder for them.

Yes, STLs could be exported before, but this encourages it even more.

If a designer wants people taking their work, they would upload their own STLs and set the license accordingly.

I don’t understand how providing STL files in addition to 3MF files would impact licensing. Could you explain the relationship between them? Do you use a different license when uploading STL files compared to 3MF files?

In my opinion, this is a beneficial addition and could attract new users who utilize third-party printers.

That’s right.
If you download a 3mf file and print it hundred times only 3 “points” are assigned. So the real “value” of the design for the community is not rated.

That certainly gives you a point. But if you simply export STLs from a 3MF, which are not useful on their own, this function is rather half-hearted. It does not lead to the desired result if the model requires modifiers. Apart from the fact that the print settings you may have spent days tinkering with are missing.

If someone really knows their printer, it can again make sense. He extracts the STLs, loads them into Cura, for example, adds the necessary modifiers and adjusts the print settings. But I’m very unsure how many people really want to spend days or hours playing around with it.

I’ll be uploading something new soon, so I’m curious to see what the extracted STLs look like. In other words, whether cut-outs by modifiers are correct or whether cut-outs are simply not exported. My guess is the latter.

That’s a very good point. I believe your guess is correct, as Bambu Studio’s STL export function also can’t handle this.

Here’s my take on 1. Auto-generated STLs from Print Profiles

By directly downloading STLs without going through the 3ML files first, the user will not see the print settings that have been set up by the designer in the 3MF file(s).

These include the global setting, special setting that are associated with modifiers, or assigned to individual parts. Multicolor assignment will be lost. The orientation of the parts is lost. What parts go on which plate is lost. If the designer uses Bambu Studio to add text or do shape modification, they will also be lost. A responsible designer would have spent lots of time on these to make sure the printed model functions and/or looks as designed.

To me, just being able to skip the time to place parts onto plates is worth downloading the 3MF files.

There can be bad profiles out there that the uploaders didn’t bother to print themselves, let alone going through multiple iterations to make sure the profiles are robust enough to be printed reliably, ie. not a hit-and-miss. These profiles can be one reason that some users prefer to download the STLs only.

Another reason could be that this is how things have been done prior to MW introducing the one-step printing concept and promoting the use of designer-provided profiles. Some users are not yet comfortable with this concept.

But there can be other good reasons out there. Apparently there are enough people asking for this feature.

@MakerWorld

Thanks for the continuous improvements.

After exploring the 0724 changes on the MW website and the Handy app, I’ve a few suggestions for the community’s and MW’s consideration:

  1. Apply the “For You” algorithm to the Featured Models and Featured Collections sections.

It’ll make the models more relevant to users, even if the models/collections are selected from curated pools. Currently I find the preset categories in Featured Collections rather arbitrary. Why Household Decor, Articulated & Flexi, Office Necessities, and Kid’s Choices, and not other themes that an user may be interested in?

  1. Going one step further, UI wise (in particular for Handy App), my preference is that the top level tabs should be: All Models, For You, and Contests.

Featured Models and Featured Collections can appear under For You page, with the algo applied. Winner Models can go under Contests.

  1. This one is probably more controversial, but I feel that to qualify to be a Featured Collection, that collection should have a certain number of models that are from unique creators, for example >50% of the models in the collection.

Why are collections presented. what is the point? Maybe I’m already too old to understand that

Collections can be used for different purposes and now used in ways that were not originally envisioned.

Collection of my own models
I use public collections to group my related designs together as I tend to release several things in the same field.

Anyone liking one of my gyros or spinners is more likely to want to find another variation I made. Collections make this easy.

They also make updating product descriptions easier as you can link to the collection page rather than editing a dozen models listing the each of the others in that ‘family’.

A designer may reach more users who choose to print multiple of the designer’s models. This raises the popularity of the collection and that could be I e the entry point to future model finds.

Collections of other designers

I believe this was the original way MW thought collections would be used.

A user picks several sport related items in a curated way that MW could possibly replicate as each user has a different thought process when they group things together.

This type of curation could lead a different user to spot two related models by different designers that they may never have found without this collection.

In my opinion they should show what collections items are in, and also give us designers a way to highlight a relevant collection. For example, I can have a dynamically inserted block that says “For more pencil cups check out the collection!” with the collection featured image. This would be a great way for users to get a feel for other designs.

Another unrelated suggestion: Give designers the ability to do text-only posts for our followers, and maybe even exclusive posts for people who boosted. I’m also liking other people’s suggestions of giving exclusive/bonus models to those who boost us.

@Tanklet @MakerWorld, are these possible to implement?
