Orange Matte Failures

I am having issues with Bambu PLA Matte Orange. I tried loading the spool on the external spool holder and it would not load. I then put it in the AMS, printed and it was fine. The next items were nothing but spaghetti. I tried 4 different times with various prints and the same thing. This morning, I changed to a .4 high flow which it does not recognize, only as a standard flow, printed an item and it was fine. The next print, same thing, spaghetti. Changed to black matte, printed fine. Is it possible that the orange filament is damp? I have it in the dryer now and after 1 hour, its reading 17-18% where most of my other filaments are reading 13-14% after the same time.

I am new to this, 6 days in fact with only 61 hours on the P2S so please forgive my ignorance.

Welcome to the forum.

You have to go into the printers settings and change the nozzle as well as the slicer. HF is an option. Been awhile but the choice is under settings.

The filament could be damp. New filament can contain moisture regardless of being wrapped and new.
Loading it externally requires you to push the filament manually all the way to the print head. Sometimes it may feel like it’s there and not be. Push the filament until you cannot push it any longer. There should be no real force needed to push it through.
Let it dry and then see what happens. If it fails to print by not sticking to the build plate, or prints something ugly. Take a pic of any failures that show something.

Ah, thank you. I did not realize that I had to change it at the printer as well and the slicer.

I was thinking that it was damp but after sitting in the AMS all night (no heat), it printed the first part just fine and then went south on every other part. I unloaded it and its been sitting in a dryer for 2 hours and its still at 15-16%. Its 29% in my home office/hobby room.

Really where it’s at is ok.
I live with humidity about the same. You need to dry but you don’t need it bone dry. Right now I’m drying only when I have issues with the filament, or it’s an exotic.

Like I said, give it a try now(ish) and if you need any more help there’s always some one that will jump in.

Again, thank you. After 4 hours in the dryer and 3 beautiful prints later I decided to order an HT as the 5th spool feeder and use the Creality dryer for just that, a dryer. Unfortunately, after about 200 g, it stated doing it again so back it went. and the dryer is reading 37% humidity.

I wish they would update the firmware in the P2S to allow dry and print like the H. My AMS has its own power supply so I don’t have to worry about that aspect.

I changed the nozzle at the display but don’t recall where its at now. Now onto unclogging the standard base nozzle.

I just got the update for the H2S this morning. I don’t need drying while printing but turned it on just to see if any issues. I have the power supply as well and it limited to 45 while printing.
I’ve been printing for a solid 8 hours and every model has come out ok. No errors thrown etc. Would imagine the firmware wouldn’t be too far off for the P2S

Good to know. 45 would work well for me as i could do an initial dry for say 4-5 hours and as I print it would keep drying. Is the C filament specific?

I have 8 refill rolls of the orange and 8 grey. I thought I split them between PLA and PETG but it appears I already had 4 of each in my cart and it was before my 3rd cup of coffee. Looks like I have some drying time ahead.

I’ve been printing pretty steady myself. Received the P2S last Thursday night and have 70+ hours of printing already. I purchased 24 rolls with the printer so I should be good for a while anyway.

Okay, so here is what its doing even after 8 hours of drying, 13-14% humidity. 1st layer is garbage but then sometimes the rest prints just fine. Maybe a setting that I need to adjust for the first few layers?

What is going on? It only happens with this one spool of Bambu Orange Matte.

Consider calibrating the filament.

I think I did that yesterday but I’m so new at this I’m not sure what I was looking at.

The first-layer “garbage” is poor adherence almost certainly caused by a dirty plate. Wash it with warm water and a grease-cutting dish detergent (Dawn, Fairy, etc). Use a clean washcloth or a small nylon brush that can reach down into the “valleys” of a textured plate. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel that was washed without fabric softener. Do not touch the surface, which will leave oily fingerprints.

The gaps between lines of filament are caused by an insufficient flow rate. Evaluating the flow rate calibration results can be difficult if you rely on the Bambu wiki’s fuzzy, low-contrast images. You might want to look at the OrcaSlicer wiki for the manual tests, which Bambu took for Studio. You are looking for the sample with the smoothest center. Don’t consider the edges for this test.

I had a very similar experience with a spool of Bambu Lab’s matte “Marine Blue”. First layer was just a disaster, anywhere from looking like your photo to a giant blob of plastic on the nozzle. I was going crazy trying to figure out the problem.

The solution, for me, turned out to be very simple: increasing the first layer temperature and plate temperature by 5ÂşC. Totally fixed it. Now I know to increase the temperature for that filament.

I try to wash the plate daily with dawn and a wash cloth that I only use for this plate. Funny thing is, I did not wash the plate and printed a Berlin Buddy Bear which is almost 7” tall right after I posted that photo without any issues. That’s what is driving me crazy I guess. Bad print and then immediately after a perfect print.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I am traveling for work but as soon as I get back I’ll do the print test and play with with flow and heat to calibrate the filament.
I’m so new at this I did not even have a starting point other that drying and that did not seem to fix it.

Is it just this color or is this the only spool of Matte you have tried? I’ve seen wet matte filament do that, dirty build plate, and running the printer on stupid fast speed. I haven’t had to mess with any out of the box settings for Matte - but I have had a spool arrive without vacuum on the bag and it was pretty wet. I could see steam while it was doing the initial load/purge and from that point forward if I see that on a spool I stop an dry it like I found it in a swamp.

I had it the dryer for 8 hours because that was my first thought and it is only this one spool of matte (I have 7 others that I have not opened). Its Bambu brand and all the basic PLA prints fine and the Sunlu PETG printed fine after I dried it for 5 hours.

I will wash the plate again when I return but its strange. Printing gridfinity bins, it may be the base at the front on one print and then the back corner on another. There seems to be not pattern to the failures (not the same area on the plate) and I wear disposable cotton inspection gloves to remove the plate and try not to touch it with my bare hands.

I have been able to print Bambu PLA pretty reliably without drying, but I use the dryer a lot for other filaments and it usually gets to <10% humidity. If you think about the process logically, the dryer dries the air surrounding the roll of filament, over time evaporation then wicks the moisture out of the filament. The outside of the spool dries first, just like pointing a hair dryer at a rolled up wet towel. Then over time the moisture in the inside/center of the spool starts working its way outwards until everything levels out at a specific humidity. So 1 hr is definitely not enough to dry all the way through. 8hr probably should be, but maybe not if a spool had a lot of moisture. I would definitely also try increasing the nozzle temp and plate temp slightly as @Bratling suggested.

At least for the headache impaired like myself.

It appears, after taking everyone’s advise the problem is solved. At least for now.

  1. Washed the plate. 2) Dried the filament for 8 hours. 3) Calibration of the filament. The only thing I did not do was increase the plate temperature but after 3 prints that took over two hours and 3 that were less than an hour I’ll keep that suggestion in my back pocket.

It appears that this specific filament absorbs more moisture than the others so I need to prep it more before printing.

Thank you all for the advice. I’m sure I’ll have plenty of more question as I continue my journey into 3D printing.
