Reallocation of MakerWorld's points reward system

Maybe English is not my native language, but I can read, and above all, understand what I’ve read.
This quote of yours refers only to boost, it has nothing to do with converting points.

Yesterday’s rule change won’t affect me a lot, but the rule change from 3 weeks ago was significant for me. My 3 most popular models are ones that take 4-5 plates to complete. So I went from earning 8-10 points per complete print to 2 points per print maximum, even if the user would print multiples. Bambu earned far more in filament sales/machine use and residuals that I did from my models, but I still earned a hefty amount of points which were converted to 2 printers and plenty of filament. I certainly appreciate being a part of the gold rush that was. I was hopeful that the elimination of rewards for “complex” models was only temporary, but alas that has stayed the same.

My design goals are certainly softened from where they were. I do get the most joy from just making things for myself and for other people to enjoy, but let’s be real - getting free printers and filament to fund my hobby was a big, thick layer of icing on that cake. With the previous points system I was motivated to try to get something unique into every contest. Not as much for the prizes but for the visibility. My wife and I would brainstorm ideas and I would start working through prototypes until I had something I thought would be a good model. Some models flopped, and some did great. I did win two honorable mentions as well. I also purchased a photo light box to take better photos, make them look as good as possible and would mix in graphic elements to present the best model I could that would work great for users. Although I love making things people enjoy, I went also went the extra mile to maximize earning potential. I have been working on improving my modeling skills by learning more software, tweaking the models I did to make them even better and trying to be the best designer I could be. I am still doing these things, but just at a more leisurely pace and with less of a priority than before. In some ways it is probably good. I really want to explore production options for the “Leanin’ Tower of Pizza” board game I created and see where that goes.

Have a big piece of cake every day was fantastic, but I will still enjoy the occasional muffin.

I enjoy your work. I’m a big fan of the Tower of Pizza. Especially being an enjoyer of puns, word play, and all that. Not everyone got that one, but it makes me smile every time I see it. I admire your work to bring a game to reality like that though!

Tried to give all of mine to one designer, I had 10, only allowed 5 and gave a pop up that said “You can only boost a creator up to 5 models per year. Go check out other creators”

Tell us about it, we have models that require 0,4 to 1,2kg and 4sure everyone will keep their boost for these :)) Sadly they haven’t changed anything to boost point revenue for complex models so MakerWorld will be full of 10grams models which takes about 1 hour of print time.

Woaw 5$ per year! That’s really not a lot!

we knew it since the begining…

great news, more rewards for the rest of us  byyyyyyyyyye

Have you not browsed through the models on MakerWorld? The vast majority have little or no downloads or prints. There are quite a few models that were most likely derived from an online tutorial. For most people 3d printing is a diversion, a hobby to occupy their time and satisfy their creative urges.

So experiences can be different. I mainly do things that have a practical use for me and then share them here. The motivation for doing more at MW was originally that I thought the Bambulab printer was excessively more expensive. I thought about refinancing such a small portion. However, the costs have expanded into the opposite. Since I don’t achieve very high download numbers with functional models, I decided to try other things. That seemed to work pretty well, so I simply made a smaller model into a larger model. The working time for this was 3 hours to complete the model using sculpting and around 1 hour to assemble the model in the slicer. In addition, it took about 20 minutes to quickly create a corresponding part, which I did with a software tool. Overall it wasn’t that much work, but it was still fun. But at the end came the presentation. Since I don’t have any light boxes or anything, I decided, despite my reluctance, to take a photo from the best perspective of the printed model and then manipulate it with image editing so that it would remain real, but would probably be far more attractive. This manipulation of a photo in particular is not fun for me; on the contrary, I prefer to show my models as they really are. All in all, it has become my best model, people downloaded it diligently, in contrast to my other models, where I only achieve download numbers over a long period of time. The model increased its download numbers like an avalanche due to ever better positioning on the pages (through the download numbers alone). Finally, I can say that for many people it is certainly a beautiful model or even impressive, but it didn’t satisfy me.
If I produce something like this on the side, I’ll probably still upload it when I have no other use. It will then be the same as on other platforms. But I will focus more on other things that have realistic earning potential and are also fun. I used to do a lot for others, help, etc. but didn’t actually earn anything from it. I don’t have quite as many years until retirement, as I get older the years go by faster and faster, my performance declines a little, strokes of fate sap my strength (sleep). We also have a house and garden, and I recently planted around 20 trees there in one day. Started in the morning, stopped in the evening. Digging holes, planting, watering etc. Then there are other interests.

So for me here on MW it’s not about earnings, but above all about motivation. The recent developments on MW have made me rethink.

Best regards!

Side note from the conversation, how many Boost Tokens have you all received to give out? In the blog post it says we start with two upfront for now and earn one a week. However, while I did start with two, later in the day I received two more, and then two more again later. Today I received another totaling 7 Boosts to give out.

I’m not complaining, I’m glad for it, just hoping others are experiencing it too since more boosts means more rewards for us all

I think I’ll just say a few words about it here. if you had read the description carefully, you would certainly have realized why we went to the trouble of providing the same model with different lettering. Because even if we don’t want remixes, we still offer a selected range of different options so that everyone can decide for themselves which fan to fit to their printer…

is there anything not legendary about this, considering what remixes are?

Man, stop it, you added the same model again, only with a 0.2mm nozzle profile, just to get into the contest and outsmart the new way of calculating points. This behavior is embarrassing and should be stigmatized and faced with consequences.
Shame on you, you’re just an example of a trickster and that’s all!
I hope @MakerWorld will react.

I mean, his name literally says “COPYKnight”. So what do we expect?!

and you see, some people like the model with the lettering and others like a different one… someone with a P1S will certainly not put an X1C logo on it… so what’s the problem if we want to make these people happy too…
and as you can see, the model is not so well received in the competition, but many people like another one more.

thank you so much. You have some pretty advanced stuff. My skills are not that advanced yet, but getting there. I love the sci-fi crates.

Here is the tip, time to make it bold and italic. And still make stupid excuses.
