We already hide the Make section.
In the next update, we will support users to select which rating they want to share.
Hi @Tanklet can you please explain how is it possible that makes done by another account but on the same printer got visible there? No need to get into details, but if you can in broad strokes it would be great.
It’s good that you’ve listened to people and allowed makes to be hidden, would it be possible to also address other points please? The sorting of pinned models UI/UX and add count to 3d models tab, please.
damnit @MalcTheOracle I wanted people to see all the prototype butt plug molds I’ve been printing, you’re ruining it for me!
Thank you for taking action so quickly on an important privacy issue like this one. I would also like to know the answer to what @Johnny_Bit asked.
We will just assume they are there until you consent to sharing your models that rarely see the light of the day!
You gotta understand there is a HUGE difference between printing something and leaving a review for other like minded people on that item versus taking that and putting it on our main profile where some people are trying to maintain a brand image. I might walk into an intimate toy shop and buy something in public but that would NEVER give the store the right to plaster my face on the window with a pic of what I bought lol.
We didn’t agree to this change of terms, which should have been opt-in.
It seems you already removed these ratings.
In fact I didn’t do anything. Even if I wanted, I couldn’t remove them because after clicking on the spiral bauble or owl model nothing happened - I couldn’t see the rating, photos, nothing. I couldn’t remove it. They just disappeared as I mentioned in a later comment. Instead, they showed up in my husband’s Recent Makes and were visible twice. For clarification, he didn’t print them twice.
I don’t know what happened, I’m not really a tech person and that’s all I know. I hope this info will help you fix the issue.
does it have anything to do with the printer binding? isn’t the printer itself bound to a single account, regardless of where it lives or what wifi its on.
I assume that if i was to move house and set up a new wifi, my printer would still be tied to me no?
Heya @Tanklet, just so my questions/suggestions won’t get lost in the thread and so you can answer it point by point:
- How is/was it possible for ratings/makes done on same printer by different account be cross-visible there? No need to get in details, just broad strokes if you can.
- Please update the way of doing “pinned” models. The ordering via order of checking checkboxes is bad UI/UX and requires re-creating whole list.
- 3d models still doesn’t show model counts. Please add counts, this is quite important for designers who now have “home” that shows grand total of 8 models (4 pinned, 4 recent) or just models (recent). Also - this change introduces friction to users exploring designers. I’ll clarify below:
There are already collections. You could leverage the collections system to allow people to curate their homepage, using selected collections as sections of the homepage and choose how it’s shown. You would need to introduce the changes requested to collections system (like custom ordering of items) to make it smoother, but the mechanisms are there. There are hidden collections such as “liked” “downloaded”, maybe introduce another hiden collection called “makes” and allow people to have “promoted makes” or something like this for curated lists of makes they’d like to show? Frankly - I wouldn’t show my photos and ratigs for stuff, but would gladly recommend some of the models I’ve printed exactly via collections.
I think there is a HUGE difference, between buying the item in public and moving away (aka print and no rating) and buying the item and leaving a note with your name and contact details and a picture of the item in your home, right in the store. Don´t get me wrong, but you left the note in the store. MakerWorld is the store.
“A friend of mine” would be very happy to visit a brothel on the other side of the world and leave a note in their guestbook about how magical the evening was with Cherry Blossom.
He wouldn’t be too happy if it then was framed and hung above his desk in his office without him knowing about it
There is also a difference between rating and sharing a photo among dozens of other ratings and photos somewhere in the comments section that almost no one looks at and having this just in your main profile.
EDIT: As @WhimsyWanderDesign said:
some people are trying to maintain a brand image.
I’m not really that case myself but sometimes I take photos of printed models haphazardly and quickly, and these are not photos that I would like to show off on my profile page.
No, you can unbind your account and bind another. This is how this normally operates. Now imagine if you will - you sell the printer. You unbind your account from that printer and give it to the person who bought from you. Then on the “recent makes” you see their makes or vice versa. It’s one thing people in the same household, but as evidenced by @Square3D’s testimonial it happens for different account on totally different net far away from original user…
You know that the DOXXING is basically gathering info that’s “obtainable” and putting it front and center for everybody to see? Every damn doxxer ever uses excuse of “but it’s public info!” Sure it is, but requires a lot of legwork to connect the dots.
//EDIT:
Same. Also - there’s a community spot - Community - Me - MakerWorld I’ve took a nice photo of the models. I rated those models with not so nice photos. I wouldn’t mind sharing choosen makes, but I would do it waaaay differently than simple rating with a photo.
I still don’t think it´s a problem as big as it´s being made - and we need to roll that back. It´s certainly not a GDPR issue, nor does it change anything for anyone. We can and should talk if it can be improved.
As we see the demand to rate “Sensible” products.
Do we need anonymous ratings?
Do me a favor and read again what DOXING means. I think you misunderstand this wrong. We do not talk about Personal Information here. But hey, maybe a lawyer can enlighten you on this topic.
Let’s start by saying I don’t think the end of the world is near and it is just an oversight to blatantly show recent makes without warning. So I’m partly with you that it is not an extremely massive deal.
BUT, say I was heavily into signs, I printed signs all day long and hung them up everywhere because… I like signs…
I printed a sign with my car model on it, because I like my car. But thousands of people have the same car…
I printed a sign with the name of my town. But thousands of people live in my town.
I printed a sign with my street name: dorpsstraat. The most common street name in the Netherlands!
But then those three prints were posted next to each other, it goes from three unfindable dots to it being quite easy to find my home.
I think this ridiculous but possible scenario comes close to what doxing is?
I still don’t think it´s a problem as big as it´s being made
No, not at all
I know one thing for sure: I will be more careful in further actions on this site, like ratings, photos, comments, etc. because who knows what will happen to them in the future.
Do me a favour and read again what I wrote. You need a teacher to enlighten you on the topic of using a comparison. And @Rossero made very fine point illustrating possible issue that comes quite close to doxxing. Hell, I printed my home street name and address (good I didn’t rate and photo that one!)
Anyway - people are voicing their valid concerns, the unwanted and possibly privacy-invasive feature that was “surprise dropped” onto people got rolled back. That’s good.
I would say you made it seriously easy for someone to find your address - and i hope you are more sensible about sharing information online. Still showing the information on the site you shared them on is no doxing. Please read again what it means, there is no bad intention involved here - nor does anyone want to shame anyone.
You need to be careful about anything you share online. If it´s a rating, a comment, a forum post, a model, a picture, you name it.
I can see all the posts you ever did in this forum, right next to each other - with a single click. Is this already doxing? But make it easy to profile people and their behavior.
I quote it again, as before. You missed personal, and bad Intention.
I get that, I must have missed the part where @Square3D said they unbound and rebound the printer when they traveled? I thought they just chucked it in the car and took it with them
Would this still happen on Makes Tab on Printables or thangs? or is this discussion continuing on from before they fixed the part where it’s now opt-in (i understand it was just there for everyone by default earlier)
