P2S: Extruder Overload

Something to check is max volumetric value. I have this problem in the past and I fixed it correcting this. I’ve seen some filament profiles that has high max volumetric value and after using it I noticed this error shows sooner or later, placing them on 12-14mm the errors totally disappeared. It looks like the extruder is working hard after these numbers.

I printed a riser kit for the glass to get it off the ptfe tube as well. So far, all of my prints are working now. I’ll try the washer trick next if it happens again. Thanks for suggestion!

I’ve been running into a recurring issue with my P2S Combo when a print requires swapping from standard PLA to Silk PLA.

During the filament change, the printer lowers the nozzle temperature as part of the swap process. This seems to work fine when switching between similar filaments, but when switching from PLA to Silk PLA, the temperature drop causes problems. Silk PLA generally needs a slightly higher temperature to feed properly, and when the printer tries to load it at the lower temperature, the filament has trouble entering the hotend.

As a result, the Silk PLA gets stuck while trying to feed into the extruder, and the printer eventually throws an “Extruder Overload” error. The filament basically jams before it can fully enter and start extruding.

Temporary workaround:
Right now the only way I’ve been able to avoid the issue is by manually increasing the nozzle temperature before the filament swap happens, or by making sure both materials are set to similar temperatures so the printer doesn’t cool the nozzle too much during the transition.

I’m curious if anyone else using the P2S Combo has run into this when mixing PLA and Silk PLA in the same print. If so, have you found a better solution or a setting adjustment that prevents the extruder overload during the filament swap?

Filament swap temperatures get dictated by the “max” field in your filament profiles “min and max” temp range. Adjust that if you need to adjust the temp at which swaps happen. It is this way for a1 and p1s so I suspect is same on p2 but don’t know for sure and firmware is close sourced to confirm, so YMMV

Set max volumetric to 12mm.on both filament. If you have it on 12 go a little down and try again.

Something I’ve found on this extruder overload error… When I get the error, it’s quite random. But what I have found that if I move the PTFE tube coming from the hub in the back (I have two AMS units connected, one is the AMS Pro 2 and the other is the original), that the extruder motor and the spring on the hub seems to try to “grab” the filament. If I give it a few seconds, it will start printing again like nothing was wrong. It’s like some sort of feed or pressure sensor on the hub on the back? I’m not sure how helpful this is…

I just had the issue again while I was typing this, just trying to get a 3 hour print completed. But the second time moving that tube around didn’t do anything. Canceled the print and did a cold pull. Guess we’ll find out of that helps. Maybe it’s the spring or some kind of one-way locking mechanism on the hub on the back?

Also had the extruder issue. Tried everything ( ptfe tube guiding, printed a riser, printed without ams, fed directly into the extruder) Nothing helped untill I saw PToTheJ ‘s solution.
Had over a 100 hours of flawless prints since.

I downloaded the sunlu silk profiles, and it did improve, I think heat creep is not helping much, but couple prints have turned out ok.

Good to hear! Intuition says that 90% of the people here would fix the problem with this solution. Btw this wasn’t my fix, I read if off a P2S community group on Facebook- I did however come to the conclusion is was the tension screw giving the problems on my own! Sadly, I guess I’m not the only one experiencing this problem. I’ve only had my Ps2 for about 2 weeks, and 4 1/2 hrs into a 5-hour print with PETG, I got the extruder overload message and after getting it cleaned out, the printer wouldn’t return and finish the print. Very frustrating. I’ve had no problems with PLA, but this machine doesn’t like PETG.

I didn’t do what @PToTheJ posted above but DID print the 1.5” or so standoff with vents. It’s helped tremendously… In fact, knock on wood, I haven’t had the issue since doing this.

I printed for 320 hours without any issues, then suddenly the same thing started happening on my P2S.
I’ve tried everything I could think of to troubleshoot the problem.
So far, the issue has only occurred with two Sunlu filaments: Sunlu PLA Matte Olive and Sunlu PLA Black.
I already noticed while printing that something might be wrong with the filament. The print quality is really poor. Both filaments are brand new, though. They’re also very brittle.
I’ve now tried the trick with the washers and raising the bed. I printed for 8 hours yesterday without any issues.

@PToTheJ What could happen if I add washers to the screw? Will anything break, or will it affect the print quality? Any idea what the consequences might be?

The consequence will be you will have a MUCH more reliable printer and the downsides are none to zero, try it. I’d assume you will only get the “extruder is overloaded” error message when you truly need to take apart the extruder to find where the filament got stuck. Try it, I’m almost certain it will fix your problem.

If you read through my comments from the start you’ll see I had the assumption that initially, taking the screw out to put the three, 3M washers would cause the little gears to fall into a mess in the extruder box.. well I was wrong.. (this was because before I wrote that comment I did in-fact disassemble the entire extruder gear box and all the little gears, mounts and springs that seat it all together in there, and I saw how tiny they were.. so I assumed they would fall apart when the tension screw came out (this tension screw feeds to a spring, that sits on a mount, that puts force on a little gear that takes it to the big orange cog/gear that you can partially see extruding out of the tool head/gear box on the left hand side of the toolhead, when you are looking at your printer… Anyway.. I was wrong… when the extruder gearbox is attached to the tool head and you take the tension screw out to put the washers on… everything will stay seated and you will see your problem will be fixed forever, with the perfect amount of tension to be rid of this problem once and for all.

Next time someone attempts this fix with the washers, maybe a little walk through with photos is in order =]

I literally put a picture on this thread. You just need to look.

The screw besides the PTFE tube, that you can see in the middle is the tension screw.

Trying to find a washer that will fit in there and that’s 3mm thickness. Is that the right one?

I just got a reply back from Bambu and they’re sending me a new Extruder servo motor. Hope that will solve my issue.
